The first step is speaking to an experienced contractor at Shepard Custom Cabinets about what you want from your custom cabinetry. A great place to start, is to send us the dimensions of your rooms, either through sketches or architectural blueprints. After we learn the extent of work required we can provide you the first cost estimate. This will begin the planning phase, and we can assist you with making the final decisions on what you want.
B. Design Details & Consultation
After doing our initial due diligence and providing an estimate to you, we will begin the design and consultation phase. We communicate with you by phone and email, and will also need to visit the site to take final measurements. This is where we finalize the design plans and estimate the time it will take to complete the project. We also create a complete list of supplies. At the end of this phase we will know the cost of the project.
C. Exact Drawings and Down Payment
During this step we will produce a payment schedule and give you ample notice for any upcoming payments. The payment schedule coincides with the subsequent phases of the project, the final plans, cabinet fabrication, and the final building.
Once the planning phase is done your project will be placed into our schedule as soon as the down payment is paid. At this point we will have a set of drawings that will contain the exact measurements and required materials. One of the main reasons we have opted for these processes is due to the challenges that arise from changes once the fabrication starts. Once your give us the word, we being to fabricate your cabinets.
D. Building the Cabinets and On-Site Installation
This is where all the pieces fall together. We start building and crafting your cabinets at our location in Anaheim. Once the fabrication phase is completed, we will transport everything to your property for the final installation. When the entire project is completed, the final deposit is due. This usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks. Custom cabinets are made to order so the turnaround time will vary depending on the style and number of pieces you choose, as well as the labor time required for each piece.
Different Styles of Cabinet Doors
Selecting the proper cabinet door is important because it is the most visible part of your cabinet face. When choosing a cabinet door there are two classifications that will affect how your cabinet looks overall, the way that the door style, and how the door is attached to the cabinet frame. Each of these factors will impact the character of your cabinet.
Cabinet Door Attachments
A full-overlay cabinet door completely covers the front face of the cabinet, and consequently provides more storage space. This one-continuous low profile surface is very popular today because the cabinet frame is covered in 100 percent.
Cabinets with inset doors have their door built into the frame and sit flush when closed. Sometimes you may see the hinges attached to an outside surface. This requires precision during fabrication.
Partial overlay cabinets expose more of the cabinet frame with approximately 1″ to 2″.
The Differences between Cabinet Door Styles
The recessed panel door gives the cabinet a sleek, streamlined look. This style is used often in contemporary cabinets, and offers a lot of options when it comes to design.
Frameless glass front cabinets have a single glass pane, but no dividing mullions.
Mullion frame doors have horizontal and vertical bars that break down the cabinet’s face into sections. The glass inserts in the panes and sections allow you to see the interior of each cabinet.
Cabinets with raised panel doors feature a central panel that is elevated and surrounded by a recessed border. Raised panel doors are a very popular and can be seen on classic to current day cabinets.
The slab cabinet door, or flat-panel door, is simply a single slab of lumber and is totally flat.
Handcrafted Bath Cabinets and Custom Vanities

Handcrafted Custom Media Centers
In addition to custom cabinets, one the more popular pieces of furniture we build at Shepard Custom Cabinets is custom media centers, otherwise known as entertainment centers. An entertainment center typically houses your television, sound systems, video game consoles, and related paraphernalia. Because your television is a central piece in your day to day living, many of our customers have found that this is a great opportunity to improve the aesthetic of their living space and get a custom-built entertainment center.
Often ready to assemble (RTA) media centers are made from cheaper materials, such as particle board, and don’t stand the test of time. Shepard Custom Cabinets only uses the highest quality hard wood for your custom media center. This will make it look great today and last many years. Having an endless tangle of wires featured in the center of your living room can be distraction and an eyesore, so we can help you build your cabinets to accommodate them, and help you conceal that clutter.
Stains and finishes
In addition to the style of your cabinet doors, the size and shape, the type of materials, you can also add more character by choosing a finish. To give the cabinet a desired characteristic, such as enhanced protection or alterations to its color or texture, a finish is applied to it.
Waterborne finishes can be used to protect against scratches and damage. They are also non-toxic to the environment. Waterborne finishes can be fast drying and can mimic the appearance of many other stains. Waterborne finishes are great if you like the look of grain patterns on your wood and want to change its color.
Glaze finishes can add texture and color to your cabinets’ surfaces. They can be applied directly on top of stained or painted cabinets. If you like a glossy look, glazing your cabinets will give it a shine, as well as add damage and moisture protection. Painting your cabinets will completely hide the wood grains, and you can pretty much change it any color that you want. A popular option is to paint your cabinets flat white. There are a ton of options out there, and the expert craftsmen at Shepard Custom Cabinets are here to help, so give us a call today.
